Hello hello, it’s time for another Payin’ Dues. When I started reviewing indie shows it was weekly. Then PPW got taken off POPtv because TNA. AWF does a lot of reruns, so I don’t review weekly anymore. Today is a new episode though!
I don’t have much to say that is going on in my life. We have a new cook at the restaurant who recently graduated from Los Roches . My daughter turned one month old yesterday. Things seem to be going smoothly. One of the tenants at the apartment called for a taxi and that taxi accidently hit her and sent her to the hospital. She should be alright but that’s about all the craziness lately. Good thing too, it was getting a little ridiculous around here.
Sunday Shockwave Opening
The show starts with its intro video of the cheesy music that has made it’s way into my heart like the WCCW theme song. The show went right to commercial which kind of makes me happy cause hopefully we get more AWF action without commercial interruption.
Orin Veidt w/ Benjamin Stacks vs. Jacob Savage
This is a TLC match in front of what looks like 50 people and a red balloon. This was the match that Orin was talking about on the episode where he faced DeNucci at Eagle Brook.
This is announced by DJ Draper and Tony DeNucci who are hard to hear over my crying daughter.. I can’t really turn up the volume either cause she just yells louder.
The match starts with a collar and elbow and goes into a headlock. That says to me to buckle down and get comfy cause this will be a long one. We have two camera angles it looks like and they fade into each other which is something I have never seen or seemed to notice on a wrestling show. It’s nice and smooth and not as jarring as some camera cuts.
The commentators are a little fuzzy and sound like they are talking way too close to a bad microphone. They put over how these two are up for AWF Rookie of the Year. I did not know AWF put out awards. How many are there?
Orin is getting outwrestled so he goes to the outside to grab a chair. Savage does the same and we have a chair dual. Savage won the battle but Benny stacks came from behind with another chair and we got a little Cena vs. Miz and Riley I Quit Match .
Savage was not phased by the shot from Stacks and Orin becomes RECKLESS as hell and does a head shot with a chair….. I haven’t seen that in some years and it instantly makes me think
“concussion”
That chair shot gave Veidt time to set up a table. You know what though? This match is calming my daughter down..
Orin goes for a running clothesline to the outside but Jacob moved and Orin ran right into the guardrail. Jacob moves the guardrail and takes Orin over to the bleachers. The crowd quickly follows but the camera does not, instead COMMERCIALS! Pizza Pub and stuff.
We come back from commercial with Savage ramming Orin’s head on something. The crowd reaction is phenomenal. This dad and his daughter have their mouths agape and loving this. The mother doing the Thinker not so much.
The camera guy is trying to get to the action. He catches up just as Savage hits Veidt with a chair. Dad and daughter know what’s up, daughter so much as to cover her ears. The women in the background? Thinking .
THEY ARE LEAVING THE ARENA!! and the commentators are calling this live and say they have no idea what is going on.. Neither do we because there are no lights out there its legit just pitch black and you hear screams. I mean SCREAMS, blood curdling .
The camera gets a light on just in time to see Jacob slam Orin on some snow, or ice maybe… Ouch. This turned into a
Blair Witch
style wrestling match. The girls are still screaming and the camera is shaking. We go to commercial.
Once we are back we see Savage still dragging Orin around like this is Attitude Era Austin/Rock. That was one thing that bugged me about brawls around the arena. You’re just holding dudes head and he is walking to the next destination. At least throw some punches in there or something.
The crowd gets back to their seats but many more people are interested in this match. Props to Savage for going out in the snow barefoot and to Orin for taking a bodyslam on icy snow. Hopefully it was fresh cause if it was a day old or two that scrapes and hurts.
The TLC match has only featured chairs right now. They are back to wrestling in the ring with snap suplexes and near falls. The crowd is invested in it, that is for sure. Outside of the noise, there is clapping and cheering and bouncing for Savage to get to his feet and fight back.
Orin drops his knee pad to deliver a Flair style knee drop on Jacob’s head. Savage gets picked up by Orin and Veidt goes for a powerbomb attempt. Savage reverses that into an impressive sit-out alabama slam for two. When Orin is in the process of kicking out Jacob turns the pin into a boston crab. Orin crawls out the ring, and Savage goes for a suicide dive, which Orin counters by throwing a chair at his head. The kids in the crowd McCallister their faces. Brutal head shots. Orin goes to either check on Savage or tell him the next spot. Then we get a picture-in-picture replay of the chair throw!! Nice work AWF.
Orin takes a ladder out and gives it to Savage for safe keeping. Stacks walks over and starts waving “no” over and over… YOUR THE MANAGER. HOLD THE DAMN LADDER!
Veidt then attempts something that we aren’t able to see and Stacks runs out of the way as Savage throws the ladder at Orin… Ok you guys.. At least have Jacob take out Benny some how. I mean if he is on Orin’s side and is next to Orin’s opponent than maybe he should constrain the opponent some way. It’s NoDQ! Why even be in the match if you aren’t interfering? What is the purpose of standing next to a guy holding a ladder and waving “no” at no one in particular, than running away before the move even happens? You are both invested and not at the same time… That is confusing.
Orin still had a ladder thrown at him and hit his head pretty dang hard. Stacks just looks on and doesn’t get involved in the slightest, not even to give Orin time to recover. Orin kicks out at two on his own power. He is taking the bigger bumps so far and been in more dire of situations. He isn’t having his manager help him outside one spot… Orin is coming off as the babyface.
Veidt hits a superkick and Savage hits a discus clothesline. The crowd is clapping and is way into it as Benny screams at them and gets them more frenzied.
Orin goes on the apron and attempts to suplex Savage to the outside. Jacob blocks a few times and hits Veidt with a punch to set up for a Big E through the ropes tackle through a table!
We cut to Dj Draper telling us about where AWF will be next like Sauk Centre on January 9th off I-94. Then January 23rd at 7 p.m. at Stillwater High School. Then it cuts to this…
These are the people responsible for this show. Bravo!
Paul Simon
is on the ring crew? Nice catch AWF, use him for music though!!
And I’m Like… The first half of the match was good. I am in high spirits for AWF and for next week. What a drastic change in quality over the past few months. I’m kind of glad I started watching this show when I did to notice how much of an improvement this year has been for this show. From not knowing characters or how to spell names or why people were wrestling each other. To having character video’s and real life video’s. To having quality matches and better interviews. To advertising upcoming matches and having a school. I am very optimistic for the future and very hyped for the conclusion of next week.
Until next time. Please share and like if you can.
Support local wrestling and have a good one.
