The pound for pound best fighter Manny Pacquiao (53-3-2) defeated Shane Mosley (46-7-1, 1 ND) with relative ease in a 12 round unanimous decision.

Round 1

There wasn’t much of a feeling out process with both men flashing their punches an d mixing up their shots. Mosley was adept and the first big key shot was a straight left from Pacquiao. Mosley and Pacquiao had equal amounts of aggression. Mosley landed a right hand at about 1:08 to the body but Pacquiao responded within ten seconds. Pacquiao was not providing the angles he usually did so it strategically played decent for Mosley. It was a back and forth of who was more engaging, with Pacquiao coming out slightly ahead.

Round 2

Pacquiao was lunging with the left hand to the body early and couldn’t measure Mosley early on, with his jab also being effective. The speed of Mosley also played a role in Round 2, perhaps leaving him a tad bit cautious when he should have been more aggressive. Pacquiao was able to start landing some combinations at 1:50. Mosley got a combo at 1:28 that backed up Mosley and then Pacquiao retorted with a 3 punch combination at 1:19. A headbutt brought it back but Pacquiao continued going downstairs and made Mosley drop the right hand.

Round 3

They clinched quickly and Mosley matching the intensity is questioned. Mosley landed a solid right hand at 2:30 but kept move forward, and exhibited head and shoulder movement. Another clinch, before Pacquiao backed him up with a looping left. They clinched again. Pacquiao’s lack of lateral movement was noted several times. Pacquiao dropped Mosley with a big left at 1:14, only the third time he’s ever been knocked down. Pacquiao aggressively pursued and Mosley held on. Pacquiao felt he was on the verge of winning and continued forward, but Mosley held on repeatedly to get out of the round.

Round 4

Pacquiao continued aggression and there was some uncertainty on Mosley’s part as he moved forward a bit, but was able to land with his jab at times. Pacquiao landed another left hand that stumbled Mosley, but Mosley worked the right and some body shots. Another hold at 1:22 from Mosley. Pacquiao landed a solid body shot at :50 of the round. Pacquiao proved to have the harder shots at the end and was moving forward more, but Mosley held his ground. He should be down 4 rounds though.

Round 5

Pacquiao landed the right hook, and it was shown 56/174 vs 30/80 landed punches for Pacquiao and Mosley. Mosley is going to need to take more risks than one according to Tarver. Pacquiao is able to find the straight left with regularity, but Mosley got double rights to the body. Mosley held his hands higher and still isn’t taking the risks to try and get on the offensive. Granted, his defensive skills are good, but he’s not going to win with Pacquiao continuing to advance over and over again.

Round 6

Mosley landed some jabs but wasn’t able to get anything behind them. Pacquiao wasn’t landing with incredible precision, but he was being far more aggressive and caught Mosley with a decent right cross at 1:38. Mosley flashed his own left jab, but Pacquiao backed him with a left hook. Tarver recommended that while Pacquiao is punching, Mosley has to punch as well. Pacquiao is moving him around and managed to land some short left punches with :10 seconds left to close out the round.

Round 7

Mosley’s corner told him he was fighting too defensive after the knockdown and he needs to trust the right hook. Mosley flashed the jab but Pacquiao was able to go faster at the 1:50 mark to land some body shots. They hit heads at 1:41. Mosley kept going for combination right hands and then Pacquiao ramped up the aggression at around the 1 minute mark. The sheer number of punches Pacquiao threw compared to Mosley’s became a factor and the forward movement. Mosley hasn’t heeded the advice of his corner.

Round 8

The crowd booed hard at the 2:30 mark of the round, the power punches significantly favored Pacquiao by this point. Pacquiao got off a right that almost landed, and caused Mosley to lock up. Mosley started wearing down and locked again at the 1:30 mark. Pac-Man continued to keep applying pressure, going downstairs and back upstairs. Pac’s angles proved to land even though at the :18 second mark, Mosley landed a stiff straight right on Pac. He’s down for all 8 rounds.

Round 9

Mentally, Mosley didn’t believe his corner. The same variables are coming into play over and over again in the fight. Mosley doesn’t have enough effort to attack and if he does, there isn’t anything to follow up with. Pacquiao began to light Mosley up, speeding up the tempo after the 1 minute mark. The speed of Pac, and how many punches in bunches he would throw indicated Mosley was still wearing down. Pacquiao fainted more as the round came to a close, landing a right on the jaw, the chin, and being aggressive.

Round 10

The round started out as a feeling process, but picked up around the midway point of the round. A controversial knock down, first counted by the outside referee than Bayless. Mosley did get a series of solid punches in, one of the first, but it seemed to be more of a balance issue rather than a knockdown. Pacquiao, clearly frustrated, amped it up, and ended the round strong. Regarding the knockout, on replay, it showed Pac threw the right and Mosley shoved off. It shouldn’t matter as he’s down 10 rounds. He’ll need a miracle to finish this.

Round 11

The crowd threw itself behind Pac. He continued to force Mosley to back up and was clearly looking for the knockout at this point, but Mosley haulted at the 2:22. Pac threw punches in bunches, right hooks and straight lefts, forcing Mosley to hold to get a respite. Mosley asserted himself, throwing a few hooks, but didn’t manage to stagger Pac. He was able to throw a counter right hand but it is too little too late by here. Pac landed the right cross and left hook combo to end the round. Gus Johnson proclaimed Mosley didn’t come to fight this evening.

Round 12

They hugged and tapped gloves before the round. The problem Mosley was presented with throughout the fight is that Pac threw so many punches, not all of them could be blocked. Mosley held a lot, even though at this point it was pointless. The crowd pleaded for a knockout in the beginning. Pac landed twice the number of punches that Mosley did, a telling sign. Before the final minute, Mosley was caught with another left to the chin and a right hook. Mosley continued to hold as the fight drew to a close. Pac in an easy victory.

Round 2 : Vazquez now starts the round on the attack and puts Arce in the corner. Arce lands a good right hook. Vazquez lands a couple hard punches of his own and Arce smiles and lands a left hook. Arce backs Vazquez up and keeps brawling, doing exactly what he wants to do. Round 2 goes to Arce, 10-9 .

Round 3 : The fight remains a brawl, which would seem to favor Arce, although Vazquez is starting to connect more now. This fight is a lot of fun, as Arce has thrown everything he has at Vazquez, and Vazquez is answering right back. I thought Vazquez was more effective in the third and I give it to Vazquez, 10-9 .

Arce is sticking and moving and lands a good right hand, Vazquez lands a left hook. They go near the ropes and Vazquez ends up falling into the ropes, but it’s a slip and not a knockdown. Both guys seem like they might be slowing down a bit, and that’s to the advantage of Vazquez, who’s a more precise, technical boxer and less of a brawler. I give the ninth round to Vazquez, 10-9 .

Round 10 : Vazquez lands a nice hook followed by a hard uppercut. Vazquez falls to the ground but it’s ruled a slip again. Round 12 : Arce picks up right where he left off and has Vazquez in a lot of trouble with huge punches against the ropes! I don’t know how Vazquez is staying up. Arce is battering him badly. And Vazquez’s corner throws in the towel! Unbelievable ending! Vazquez’s father, Wilfredo Vazquez Sr., threw in the towel to save his son from taking further punishment. A heartbreaking ending as Vazquez Jr. clearly does not agree with his father’s decision to end the fight.
