The passing of Roddy Piper has been especially hard on those of us who grew up in the Northeast during the late 1980s and 90s. Roddy was truly larger than life, and it's hard to express just what he meant to me as a wrestling fan. I'm planning to write a retrospective piece on the "Hot Rod" within the next few days, and in preparation I began watching all the Roddy tapes I could find. Of course "tapes" means "internet" in 2015, so I figured I might as well share my findings with the good people at Cheap-Heat.com. Roddy Piper was more than just a man in a kilt who cracked coconuts and told jokes—he was an outstanding professional wrestler. I've combed through YouTube and Dailymotion to find seven stellar Roddy Piper matches I think everybody has to see. The majority of these matches are shown in their entirety, but there are a couple you'll need to click "Part 2" to continue. I think it's a small inconvenience considering the man we're honoring today. We can all take solace that Roddy will be in good company when he walks through the ropes of that big ring in the sky.

7. LA Olympic Auditorium (1976)
Roddy Piper vs. Chavo Guerrero Sr.

Roddy was born in Canada and got his start in America working along the west coast. He enjoyed nearly 3 years working opposite Chavo Guerrero Sr., a program that would help the "Hot Rod" develop his verbal timing and comedy chops. It was Chavo who prompted Piper to play "La Cucaracha" in lieu of the Mexican National Anthem—in Mexico. Here's Roddy against Chavo in 1976 when Piper was just 22-years old. (Part Two Available)

6. WrestleMania III – Hair versus Hair Match (1987)
Roddy Piper vs. Adrian Adonis

Piper started making movies such as "They Live" and "Hell Comes to Frogtown." To Roddy, filmmaking was a matter of "quantity over quality." Roddy has more than 40 film credits to his name, including over a dozen television appearances. His cinematic career began to balloon out of control and in 1987, Piper stepped away from the Sports Entertainment spotlight, and went off to Hollywood. He returned two years later, but that's not the point. Here he is in his "Farewell Match" – a hair versus hair contest featuring Adrian Adonis. (Part Two Available)

5. WrestleMania XII – Hollywood Backlot Brawl (1996)
Roddy Piper vs. Goldust

I often say that 1996 was my favorite year in of professional wrestling. It was a pretty good year for Roddy Piper as well, who went from being the Interim President of the WWF, to a main event talent in WCW. Piper's most prolific moment in 1996 was a match Dave Meltzer refused to grade. It's the Hollywood Backlot Brawl from Wrestlemania XII!

4. Pacific Northwest Wrestling – 2/3 Falls Match (1980)
Roddy Piper vs. Buddy Rose

Roddy made his name working for Don Owens' Pacific Northwest Wrestling located in Portland Oregon. Here's a vintage cut [that means terrible video] of Roddy's one-on-one 2 out of 3 falls match against "Playboy" Buddy Rose.

3. Starrcade 1983 – Dog Collar Match (1983)
Roddy Piper vs. Greg Valentine

This is one of the bloodiest, and most brutal brawls every recorded on tape. It's a true testament to what kind of performer Piper was, and how far he'd go to entertain his fans. Unfortunately it's very hard to find a free video of this match. It is currently available on the WWE Network as part of Starrcade 1983. Instead of leaving you with nothing, I've included a retrospective interview featuring both Roddy Piper and Greg "The Hammer" Valentine.

2. WrestleMania VIII – Intercontinental Championship (1992)
Roddy Piper (c) vs. Bret Hart

Nobody retired more than Roddy Piper. In 1992, "Hot Rod" won the coveted Intercontinental Championship from the Mountie. He put the strap on the line against Bret "The Hitman" Hart at Wrestlemania VIII in what some believe to be the match of the night.

1. The Wrestling Classic – WWF Championship (1985)
Roddy Piper vs. Hulk Hogan

Roddy Piper and Hulk Hogan had an intense rivalry that was rooted in reality. Piper was among the most popular Sports Entertainers on Vince McMahon's roster, but Hogan was the one who reaped all of the rewards. Their tag team match at Wrestlemania will always be remembered as one the most iconic in history. But their one-on-one title match at The Wrestling Classic was absolutely outstanding, and even earned a 4-Star Rating from Dave Meltzer.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Roddy's children and grandchildren, as "Rowdy" Roddy Piper will remain in our hearts until the end of time. Just when we thought we had the answers, he changed the questions. How about that, WWE Network fans! WWE added as much as they possibly could from the 1994, 1995, and 1996 Hall of Fame ceremonies to the Network this week. I say “as much as they possibly could” because for whatever reason, they didn’t record the entire events back then. However, they posted as many inductions as possible from the inaugural events, divided up by years, for a runtime of roughly two hours.

2015-03-06 18.25.41 I’m really glad they put these up, because with the exception of a fan cam recording that I have from the 1995 edition, I had never seen these events. A lot of the speeches were short. After all, it was different back then. Those first HOF’s were held as banquet dinners. It definitely wasn’t as a big of a deal as it is now. However, the speeches from the likes of “Captain” Lou Albano and Pat Patterson make it worth a watch.

I freakin’ love the Hall of Fame every year. People used to give it crap in the past, saying it lacked credibility, and that it’s not a “real” Hall of Fame because it lacked this name or that name. Well, with the unimaginable inductions of once shunned WWE performers Bruno Sammartino and The Ultimate Warrior, combined with this years upcoming “It’s About Time” induction of Randy Savage, I think we have just about every guy that deserved to be in there, in.

Okay, so maybe you’re still questioning the Hall of Fame’s credibility.

“It’s about booking guys only to make another buck off of them.”

“It’s a night of ego stroking for Vinny Mac. He inducted Scott Hall as ‘Razor Ramon’ and Madusa as ‘Alundra Blayze’! He will only accept people HE created and people he likes!”

Okay, smart mark. How about you stop booing Roman Reigns for two seconds, sit down, and enjoy the damn show.

At it’s core, the WWE Hall of Fame is about honoring men and women who not only were the best at what they did, but they sacrificed their body, as well as time with their loved ones, to ensure that they weren’t anything less than the best. It’s about celebrating a lifetime of hard work. It’s about being able to relive a wrestlers’ greatest moments with him or her, all while getting to share in one last incredible moment with them.

Personally, I love relaxing and reliving those career moments with those individuals on the night before WrestleMania. I enjoy hearing those old war stories from the guys that paved the way for me– like how Roddy Piper and Bob Orton were always on the verge of inciting riots, or how Freddie Blassie would get stabbed because he was legitimately despised. I love to laugh at those behind the scene incidents that the cameras don’t see– like Owen calling his father Stu pretending to be Reg Park, goading him into a fight on the weekend of Wrestlemania IV.

And dammit, I’m man enough to admit it: I love to cry while watching the Hall of Fame. I don’t know if anything tugged on the strings of my heart more than Jake Roberts speech last year, or Bobby Heenan’s speech in 2004. When he says, “I only wish that Monsoon was here..” as he fights tears, I too have to fight the impending eruption from the water faucets that are my eyes. When Ultimate Warrior passed away just three days after he had been inducted and made amends with WWE, it was hard to go back, watch his speech, and not cry when you watched him speak about the love of his daughters.

Yea, sorry I’m getting all sappy. It happens, though! Look, whether you laugh, cry, or just plain smile while watching, the WWE Hall of Fame is the night you stop worrying about whether or not Bryan is in the main event of ‘Mania. It’s the night where you shouldn’t be concerned about hashtagging why divas are or are not getting the time you think they desreve.

On the night you watch the WWE Hall of Fame, it’s time to remember just why you watch wrestling in the first place. You go back to being a fan– not a SMARK. You aren’t concerned about the lack of “workrate” The Bushwackers would have had when compared to tag teams of today. You sit back, listen to their journey, discover what got them to the grand stage of the Hall of Fame, and reminisce about how when you were six years old, you wanted nothing more than to sit front row at a WWF event just so Luke or Butch could lick your face….
